Julian (Jules) Hawthorne

The club wishes to thank Julian Hawthorne who has moved on from Kidsgrove Chess Club.
Julian (Better know as Jules) has played for the club since 2013 and has been the team captain. He has played a major part in keeping the club going when resources have been stretched

Jules plays most of his chess in individual tournaments and has had a lot of success. We wish him well .

New Season so far

The start of the new season in Division 4 of the NSDCA  has seen 3 wins from 4 matches. (See the link for full details). However we faced a strong team from Newcastle in the Cup match and we will try again next season.

To new players have joined the club . (One is already playing matches).

I would invite anyone who is interested in playing chess to come along and visit us. (It is always worth contacting us beforehand to ensure someone is available to meet you.

Well done Jules!

Some of our members opt to play in Chess Congresses in various parts of the country.

Jules Hawthorne is one who plays in these congresses and during last weekend claimed victory in the under 130 grade tournament. He shared the first prize with 4 wins from 5 games at the Midland Open.

He also entered the "ECF Grand Prix"  which is a series of games over 12 months from 1st July to June 30th  Jules won the Under 120 grade section.

Well Done

AGM 7th August

The Club AGM took place at Kidsgrove CC with a good attendance and concluded with a positive programme forward after a quiet summer.

Even though there has been further interest from potential new members there was not quite enough commitment to enter a second team.   With the new grades issued and the fact that Rich is taking a sabbatical from league chess it meant that a team will be entered into division 4 of the NSDCA. . Kidsgrove  can also enter a team in the under 130 "Intermediate" trophy . The fixtures will be released in due course

There will be a new focus on our internal competitions in order to give members further games which will be graded. Both standard play and Rapid play

The Roy Bennet Trophy was won by Dave Johnson for the first time.  Dave in the Man U shirt is presented the trophy by the previous winner Rich

This is a good time to come and join us in order to be included in our club competitions

Over the summer

Over the summer events have been quiet. It was sad to learn of the death of one of our members who passed away at the end of April. Brian Hitchens returned to playing league chess after a 20 year break. Brian had just played a few games for Kidsgrove. The members were just getting to know Brian . His death was unexpected.

There has been some interest form some junior players with one attending to play some of our members. As August came members started to play a few practice games. We hope to keep their interest.

Win and a draw from the first games at our new venue

Kidsgrove's results continue to improve with a win and a draw in our first 2 home games at our new venue at Kidsgrove Cricket club.   We have also welcomed a new member which positive news. If we could attract one more regular player there would be a possibility of a "B" team next season. Grade would not be important, so anyone out there who fancies a challenge of playing chess please contact us. (All the latest results are on the link "NSDCA) )
